Example of Bystander Effect - Elderly Man Paralyzed in Hit and Run
In this surveillence video you see a 78 year old man being hit by a car and laying paralyzed in the middle of the street as bystanders watch on and no one offers help.
Wow! This research is freaking me out! I thought human beings were more compassionate and caring toward each other that this. I hope that awareness will help eliminate the bystander effect.
Bystander effect can be described as the phenomenon in which there is a diffusion of responsibility between bystanders when there is a person in distress or in an emergency situation. The greater number of people present, the less likely people are to help the person in need of help. Observers are more likely to take action in an emergency situation when there are only a few or no other witnesses.
What influences the Bystander Effect?
Pluralistic Ignorance - When bystanders assume there is nothing wrong in an emergency because none of the other observers seemed concerned.
Diffusion of Responsibility - A bystander's sense of responsibility to help in an emergency decreases as the number of observers increases.
Kitty Genovese
Have you ever witnessed in person the bystander effect (votes are annoymous!)
